The Japanese deserved to be nuked, and we had every right to do so.

Yeah. Especially the toddlers padding around in their diapers, carrying their teddy bears.

Those who have lived in war zones can tell you war ain't nice. Innocent people do get hurt. It is difficult to pick out exactly whom to kill and then to do that without harming anything or anyone else. One does what one can to defeat the enemy. It's nothing personal, you know.

As to Iraq, well, perhaps next time they'll think ... non-combatant nation, ignoring their surrender agreement, (etc etc etc)

As opposed to the U.S., which has nuked thousands of innocent civilians,

To prevent the death of millions in a war started by a fanatical country that had gone on a rampage and caused suffering on an unimaginable scale.
gathered American citizens into concentration camps during WWII because of their race, performed medical experiments on poor black southerners, attacked ... at Waco, and in earlier times wiped out whole villages of indigenous people upon official orders of the U.S. Army.

Yeah, and made faces at Betty Boop.
You're welcome to invade the United States of 1842, though given the standards of behavior then prevalent among the world's nations, it's hard to imagine you'd be making things anything but worse.

Then by the same logic Bin Laden has every right to nuke you, supposing he can get his hands on some,

Oh, yes, right, the US has invaded every country in sight in a ruthless campaign of imperial domination. In doing so, it has discarded every principle of wartime restraint, even going so far as to use anthrax against Chinese civilians. It has invaded the nation Bin Laden runs without cause. And the only way to defeat it is with an invasion of the home continent that will take millions of lives on both sides, whereas dropping the bomb on two cities will take perhaps 200,000 and end the war with far lower casualties.

I'm curious as to why so many can't seem to see the difference between the two scenarios. Lack of education? Ideological or nationalistic resentments so frothing and foamy that they override the self-evident?

Not lack of education so much as miseducation. Somewhere, Dewey is smirking.
