Dear Alps,IELTS is administerated by British Counsils,the University of Cambridge, and IELTS Australia while TOEFL is administered by ETS, a US-based non-profit and is used widely by American and Canadian universities.
Hi,
Alps AlpineI want to know the difference between TEFL and IELTS.Whats the benefit of TEFL examination??
First thing first, TEFL qualifications are for teachers of English as a Foreign Language, so I assume you meant TOEFL and not TEFL.

Both the TOEFL and the IELTS are exams designed to assess the level of English of prospective international students who want to enrol in a university in an English-speaking country.

Unlike other exams (e.g. the FCE, the CAE, the CPE, Trinity Exams), they both focus on academic English rather than on general English.

There are differences between the two exams, and if you're interested in taking one of them I'd suggest:
  1. checking what your Uni requirements are (universities in the USA generally require that candidates have passed the TOEFL with a certain score; universities in the UK generally require that candidates have passed the IELTS with a certain score, but many also accept the TOEFL);
  2. (in case your Uni accepts both) checking how the two tests work (tasks, time, dates and venues, costs, internet-based or paper-based etc).
You'll find plenty of information here:
TOEFL IbT (Internet-baset test) , TOEFL PbT (Paper-based test)
