The graph illustrates how accommodation was owned and rented by households in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, there was an increase in the proportion of accommodation owned by families in England and Wales, while a decline was seen in the figure for that rented by households. In addition, the percentage of housing that families rented in 1918 accounted the highest figures over the period shown.

The percentage of accommodation owned by households in England and Wales started at around 22%, after which it saw a sharp growth to just over 30% in 1939 and 1953, followed by a moderate rise to 50% in 1971, which exceeded the figure for housing that families rented in this year. Meanwhile, nearly 78% of accommodation was rented by households in 1918, with a leveling off at this level until 1953, but later it witnessed a dramatic decline to 50% in 1971.

From 1971 onwards, the proportion of housing that families owned in England and Wales kept a significant increase to just under 70%, before ending the period at approximately 64%. Meanwhile, the percentage of accommodation rented by households decreased consistently to 31% in 2001, but later it experienced a steady growth to roughly 33% in 2011.
