I've never had Spanish at school, only English, German, Latin and French.

You really must stop trying to annoy poor Mickwick with this languages stuff. You are one over his three already.

But those languages were compulsory - though Latin was only compulsory in middle school if you wanted to go to the language gymnasium. But everybody took it.
And of course we read Norwegian and Swedish in Danish:-).

Apart from gym, I didn't wear shorts in high school until the end of eleventh grade, when I went through ... with various kinds of buttoned shirts. I don't think those are the kinds of shorts that Danish 'boys' (men) wear.

Actually, these days it is the kind of shorts most Danish males wear - and the kind of shorts most males all over the planet wear when wearing shorts. Even scouts wear Bermuda length shorts ...

I went with my daughter to look at the Hill School in Pennsylvania (where James Baker was educated). They called their 11th grade "Fifth Form", and 12th grade "Sixth Form".

But Sixth Form takes two years {that's why the last year should be called Seventh Form as has been done in New Zealand}.

Jolly good show. You will have observed that Mickwick's actual curiosity was even more exploratory.
Isn't there a shorts/underpants issue here? cf Bart Simpson 'eat my shorts'?
DC, who wore both at school at various times.

Shorts had long gone for UK scouts, even when I was one circa 1969.

Areff is an American, so he certainly won't have attended ... shorts at high school then it was probably from choice.

Boxer shorts (a form of normatively-male underwear) are called "shorts" by some people, but to me they're "boxer shorts" or "boxers". Interestingly, I would consider boxer shorts to be "underwear" but not "underpants" in the male context, "underpants" means briefs. Incidentally, I would expect that Danish men (and women, for that matter) would prefer briefs to boxer shorts, but that's not based on any personal knowledge.

Also, boxer shorts are not shorts.

Shorts, longs or breeches have been options throughout the year for the individual Danish scout - for decades. Except for the Baden Powell Scouts who wear shorts when they visit Greenland in the winter:-).

At this site:
www.pinetreeweb.com/1929-times13.htm
which reproduces the coverage in The Times* of the 1929 World Jamboree of Boy Scouts, there's a splendid photograph captioned "A musical interlude in the Danish camp". The shorts, I think we all will agree, speak volumes.**
(But not as splendid as the ones captioned "Nigeria at the Jamboree" or best of all "Cheerful occupants of one of the wards in the Jamboree hospital". They look like the cast of *Billy Bunter on acid.)
(** That's because they're voluminous shorts. Ho ho.)
