The America Mr Jefferson envisioned hasn't come about. The country is in a right mess, in fact. How to remedy it? That is the question, for those of us who'd like to be proud of the country. Here are some proposals, not that I'm necessarily recommending any of them. Some are more starry-eyed than others.
* Return rule to Great Britain, name the country New England, and convince EU leadership that Britain, when combined with New England, won't ruin the economy of Europe. Adopt British ways in all parts of New England, needless to say.
* Dissolve all state boundaries, rename the resulting country New York, and encourage the New Yorkers to make the entire country as much like its new capital, New York, as is possible. Then slowly modify the capital until it is more like Paris, Rome, or Dublin than it is. Keep the skyscrapers. Skyscrapers are cool.
* Bulldoze, one by one, every American town and start afresh. Put ugly factories and warehouses outside the new towns' boundaries, disallow the construction of shopping centres sure, might as well adopt British spelling, while reforming prohibit cars in the towns' centres, fund the finest of public transportation systems each community can afford, make gun ownership illegal and let hunters rent weapons when hunting on preserves far removed from the population, and require that every town with a population of more than 40,000 have at least one concert hall, theatre devoted to plays, museum, and opera house. Some might argue the need the for the last facility, but it wouldn't be me.
* Convene a Constitutional Congress to rewrite the document with the driving factors being to force economic good sense by the Congress and the president, to eliminate any role for God or religion in cases where the government has an impact, to criminalize gun ownership, and to explicitly disallow the president to engage the military against sovereign nations without a two-thirds majority approval from Congress. Have Congress review the situation quarterly. Force tax reform, with a simple sliding scale for everyone and no other provisions and eliminate the Electoral College. Then get down to considering the other things that need changing.

Then what would we call what is currently "New England"? "Old New England"?

I think we should merge all the Northeast blue states into a state called New England. That act alone should give Republicans cloture in the Senate.

What I can't figure out is why no one seems to point out that while private accounts won't solve the 2042 problem, perhaps they will push it back a ways, they certainly will help solve the 2017 problem, when the general fund has to start paying back its loans from Social Security while the general fund is still, presumably, in massive deficit.

Serendipitous typo.. (I assume good ol' boys wouldn't want to call "cloture"; the word certainly works, but it's suspiciously dairy- product-devouring and concessionarily simian sounding...)

Her Majesty's Inspector of Taxes requests the payment of the duty payable on all imports of tea into New England via the port of Boston. According to our records, the Colony is in arrears with these payments since 1775. If full payment, including interest payable, is not received by 1 March 2005, HM Inspector of Taxes shall have no alternative but to take action by sequestration.
It is the policy of HM Inspector of Taxes to gather duties in an ethical manner. If the Colony is in financial difficulties and cannot pay the full amount immediately, it is essential that you should write to our office and explain your special circumstances. Where it is deemed appropriate, the Inspectors are authorised to enter into terms and conditions designed to facilitate the eventual payment. However, if this involves any delay in the payment, interest at the rate of Bank of England plus 2% shall additionally be payable for the delay involved.
If you believe that your tax liability has been incorrectly assessed, you may appeal. The appeals procedure is described in document ASP/2005, enclosed.

There is a simple American solution to that. If you won't go along with what it wants, it may well declare an undeclared war on your country and make it go along.

Then get down to considering the other things that need changing.[/nq]In all seriousness, I LOVE this idea. This IS where we're headed. But, with terrorists out to nuke us all, we have more pressing concerns, Riggs. For real, you know that! I also think we should retroactively get back-paid ALL our old debts for helping to reconstruct nations. E.G., now that Europe and Japan are somewhat modern and have marginally strong economies, their governments should pay us the 1945 amount of money we spent on helping to rebuild them, in current, 2005, values.

It's ONLY fair. Then, when Russia modernizes, when Korea modernizes, Viet Nam, Iraq, Iran, Saudi, etc...we do the same thing. Once their economies are somewhat stable, they have to pay us back. FOR REAL, we are the ONLY country who doesn't get repaid its debt, BUT everyone else expects US to pay off OUR debts to them. UNFAIR!! Why should my parents and grandparents have invested all this money in these countries who now have less debt than us? They OWE us.

Just like, in the future, IRAQ and AFGHAN will owe MY children the money of mine and my rents that went to helping those countries, Bosnia, Jordan, Korea, Sudan, Indonesia, etc. It's ALWAYS nice to help out people when in need. But the THIRD WORLD MUST RECIPROCATE OUR EFFORTS! Why should AMERICAN CIVILS be the ONLY people of the world assisting poor people??!! We ain't all loaded ourselves! How come some Saudi, Lesbian, French, Korean billionaires aren't gonna help ME to have a stable future???
