Dear all,

I know the meaning of depend on in bold in the following sentences. They are from my textbook. It means to be conditioned or contingent. However, The given definition of depend on in the textbook say: depend on = to expect that something will happen. Am I wrong or is it wrong? Thank you for your help.

Clearly, the number of people that the Earth can support in the future will depend on many things.

The future of the Earth depends on how we use its natural resources.

Thanks.

depend on = to expect that something will happen.

Your two example sentences do not reflect that definition. Here is a sentence that does:

Don't worry, son — I'll always support you. You can depend on it!

depend can mean to expect something to happen, I don't think it's used in that sense in your examples though.
