Do you remember that Galileo had to abandon his astronimic views - to escape Giordano Bruno's destiny?
I just say that the Roman Church has proven it can change. BTW, has anybody proposed Benedictus XVI to put Spain under an interdict, until they repel their new marriage law which permits gay people to marry? You see, they /can/ change.

Yes, he had to, but only because otherwise he would've been charged a more serious ,,crime''. It was something about his views on the nature of Nature and his support of atomism, which clashed with the idea of transubstantiation (I overuse "of", I think).
