Does the phrase "thinking to oneself" correspond to anything in reality, I wonder? Something that can be distinguished from merely "thinking"?

Or is the phrase simply a literary convention?

Good point.

On the other hand I am quite well known for 'thinking out loud' where I'm lost in my thoughts but all the random stuff generated is being spoken as well to the amusement or confusion of onlookers, so I suppose you can think to yourself.

To me it means that there is no intention of sharing what you are thinking with others. Very private thoughts. Usually a literary convention as you suggest.

('There, that told them! Fools! Ha! I knew I was clever', she thought to herself)

If I imagine a conversation or a monologue in my head, I am thinking to myself.....instead of expressing myself aloud to someone else.
