I'll try a few examples that might help, but MM is right; it is hard to tell from what you have posted.

I'll give the message to John.

I have a message for John.

I bought tickets to the play for John.

When John arrives, I'll give the tickets to John.

When his cat died, I felt very sorry for John.

I expressed my sympathy to John when his cat died.

I gave directions to the church to John.

I had directions to the church printed for John.
