What do you think of this introduction I made to my essay? -

- At that distant year of 1964 we were living a bad time with people going to sheets to claim for something almost every day." Is the use of "sheets" correct?

Thanks in advance to all people who made comments

CaretaCan you use sheets to mean a large group of people in a line/queue (a mass of people? - does it make sense in English?) Thank you for your interest and help you have been of great help in my learning.

No, not for people.
Sheets, in the sense you were hoping for, is quite specifically used for water/rain.
