I'm telling my friend about a story my other told me about that happened in the past but may still be relevant in the present. Should I use:

I have a friend he tells me that when he goes clubbing sometimes a lot of strange things happens to him.

OR

I have a friend he told me that he went clubbing a few times and strange things happened to him.

What would a native use?

Thank you!

Mister MicawberI have a friend who told me that he went clubbing a few times and strange things happened to him.
Will it work if I use tells instead of told in this situation?

Why have I commonly heard the present tense used to describe a past situation?
