"a special kind of goods": sofas / refrigerators / cell phones etc...
Yes. A top-of-the-line refrigerator in a given line of merchandising, is the best refrigerator, either within the particular manufactering company that makes refrigerators, or among all refrigerators made by all companies that manufacture refrigerators. A company that manufactures kitchen appliances may have a line of refrigerators, a line of stovetops, a line of dishwashers, etc. In this case, the line of merchandising would be within that company. Depending on your context, a top-of-the-line refrigerator in a given line of merchandising, in a given company, might be a middle-of-the-road, or bottom-of-the-line refrigerator when compared to the best model made by other companies.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the details.

"a line of refrigerators, a line of stovetops, a line of dishwashers, etc."

Very vivid!

______

middle-of-the-road (Cambridge)

describes a person, organization, opinion or type of entertainment that is not extreme and is acceptable to or liked by most people:
middle-of-the-road pop music
They adopted a sensible, middle-of-the-road policy on defence spending.

bottom-of-the-line (infoplease dictionary)

being the cheapest item of its kind made by a manufacturer; produced as inexpensively as possible (opposed to top-of-the-line): bottom-of-the-line merchandise that has no warranty.
Hi Meantolearn,

There's probably a better term than 'middle of-the-road' in this kindof context. I can't think of it right now, though.

Sureendkl, I'm not sure what you're asking. If you want to ask someone WHAT, exactly?
