Wood description

Man and the forest

There has always been a close connection between a human being and the forest-it served people as a shelter and a peaceful home in prehistorical times and represented the first source of heat energy and different foods later on. The first tool for cultivation of the field was also made of wood and the plough was originally called ˝the tree˝.

It was not the stone culture, but the timber and the tree culture which primarily existed; unfortunately there was only stone left as a proof of the culture of that time because the wood mouldered away.

Throughout the centuries the Slovenian man has been dependent on the forest in his struggle for life-in bitter moments of the history the forest offered a safe shelter for the local people, who were the only ones who mastered all the small hidden nooks.

It is good to know that the forest keeps universal wisdom of principles, which hold true for all the living people, also for us. We should preserve the forest in order to be able to get wood from it when we will forget what is the meaning of our lives.

Usage of the wood throughout the time

The wood was one of the greatest goods that contributed to the rising and development of the first settlements. It was basic building material, because there was plenty of it and not much in demand. The lack of wood appeared in 15.century

with expansion of the cities and the greater demand for it. At the same time the wood as an inflammable material caused fires and the middle age cities were often completely burnt down. Therefore the citizens wanted to substitute the wood with safer building material which was very expensive at the beginning. The lack of wood caused price rise so the wood was replaced by other uninflammable materials what was supported also by the municipal authorities. It was believed later on that wood as the building material was inappropriate which is not true at all. The wood was preserved in the buildings where its characteristics were indispensable.

(Abstract from the magazine LES/wood 2001, year 53,nb. 6, p. 196 – 201)

The new era has begun with the improvement of the offer and with informing invertors about the opportunities that timber construction provides. Modern architecture again considers the wood as the ideal building material-it is a good isolator, it works naturally, pleasantly and it breathes.

What is pine tree?

The pine tree (Picea abies) is probably the most common coniferous tree in . It grows in mingled forests and it also forms pure pine tree forests. It prefers wet and higher-lying areas to lowlands. The same as the wheat for example, the pine tree is also very important plant for us, because it is used for making various objects which are nowadays indispensable.

Characteristics, advantages: Pinewood is fit for use as building and constructional material. It is used for making windows, doors, interior arrangement, furniture, laths, ?, cases, veneer. The mountain pinewood that is thickgrown is mainly used for making resonant bottom of musical instruments.

Pinewood is soft. It weighs per cubic decimetre. Its characteristic is moderate volume contracting, solidity of a dry pinewood is good. It stretches very little. Pinewood is moderately resistant to weather conditions and therefore has to be protected with constructive measures. The sensitivity to mould and pest is similar to that of the ?, therefore a good storage is necessary. If pests appear, a treatment with water vapour has to be done. The scent of pine trees is pleasantly resinous.

The pinewood is easily workable, mainly easy to paste, ?, to be hammered in, but it can be split very easily. Sometimes there are dark lines in the pinewood and often appear knots of various shapes that form lively patterns. The content of resin differs according to the age and the area of vegetation and it is a lot smaller that that of the fir tree or larch.
