Where is the house of God?
A picture has engaged Fatimah's mind for a while: a picture which she had seen on their house's wall, on the wall of her grandmother's house and in some other places as well. She was asking herself all the time, "What's this place?"
Every day, when her mother goes to work, takes her to her grandmother's house so that Fatimah would not be alone. Today, when she arrived at her grandmother's house, she pointed the picture on the wall to her grandmother and asked, "Granny! What's the place in this picture?"
Grandmother: "Darling! This is Kaaba, the God's house."
"Granny! Does God have a house too!? Where's God's house?" Fatimah thought a bit and asked again.
Grandmother: "Yes dear! This house is in Mecca, the city where our prophet, holly Mohammad (God bless him and his family) was born there & God has chosen him to be His messenger & he's invited people to Islam."
Fatimah: "Is it possible to go to the God's house?"
Grandmother: "Why not, my girl! Going there is an obligated duty of every Muslims. Each year in a specific time, Muslims from around the world are gathering there & perform a ceremony which is called "Hajj" . You don’t know how great this ceremony would be! All the people, young and aged, women and men, black and white, in the same white clothes (like angles) circling around the God's house and pray. The God’s house is called Kaaba as well."
Fatimah: "Does God have created his house?"
Grandmother: "No darling! This house is built by the God’s command with the hands of Abraham (Peace be upon him) who was one of the God’s prophet. Compassionate God has provided this sacred place to maintain Islam and a safe place for those who take refugee on Him. Our dear prophet, holly Mohammad (God bless him and his family), who had been the God’s last messenger and the last prophet; and also all the other prophets who preceded him had been praying in this sacred place."
Fatimah: "Granny! Does God’s house have door? Does it have window?"
Grandmother: "Yes darling! It has a door but no window. Although it doesn’t have any window but it has curtain! & its curtains are hanged from outside, all around the God’s house and those are in black. Qur'an verses with a very beautiful golden font are written all around these curtains! And God’s house’s door is golden and it has a beautiful golden padlock."
Fatimah: "Granny! If one day we go to Mecca, can we go inside the Kaaba?"
Grandmother: "No darling! Just some individuals are allowed to enter or a group who enter to clean."
"Dear Fatimah!" Grandmother looked at Fatimah’s eyes and saw more questions in it, then continued, "If you want to know more about Kaaba and Mecca, wait when your uncle came back, ask him all of your questions. He will explain you everything very clearly. Now, I go to make a delicious lunch for dear Fatimah."
"Thank you granny!", Fatimah shouted out of joy.
It became noon; the sound of azan was heard. Fatimah and grandmother performed partial ablution to say prayers together.
Fatimah as wore her veil and prepared to say prayers, turned to grandmother and asked, “Why we stand in this direction and pray?”
Grandmother: “Because this direction is toward the Kiblah and we turn to Kiblah in prayer."
Fatimah: "Kiblah?"
Grandmother kissed Fatimah’s face, “Yes darling! Kiblah. We Muslims, wherever in the world, stand facing the God’s house during daily prayers. This direction is called Kiblah. When your uncle arrived, he will show you Mecca and Kiblah direction on the globe in his room then you will understand it well.
After the prayers, Fatimah and grandmother ate lunch and Fatimah helped grandmother to collect the dishes and table.
It was afternoon when the doorbell sounded. It was Fatimah’s uncle who came back from university. Fatimah ran to her uncle, said hello and told, "Dear uncle, can you show me the city of Mecca on the globe?"
"Hi my sweetie!” The uncle answered, “Let me wash my face and hands, get changed, and then come to my room."
Fatimah became so happy and waited for the uncle to get the answers of her questions.
A few minutes later, the uncle, called Fatimah and told, "Dear Fatimah Come into my room!"
On the table, there was a small globe which all parts of the earth were shown on it.
Uncle: "Dear Fatimah! The earth where we live on is approximately, as round as this ball but as it's so vast and big, we don’t sense that we're living on a round thing!"
Fatimah: "If the earth is so big & round & no one can see its roundness, how did they find out it is round?"
Uncle: "Sweetie, far years ago, a scientist named Galileo found this & now by the help of a device which is called satellite, they're able to take photos of the earth, satellites are capable of being in a distant far away from the earth & take photos almost from all parts of it & these photos clearly show that the earth is round. Do you see these brown parts? These are lands and various regions on the earth. The blue parts are seas and oceans.
Look at the lands; look, there're some of them! Each one of these lands is called a "Continent"
Uncle is showing Fatimah the continents one by one and telling Fatimah their names as well, "This is "Asia",
This is "Europe,
Here is "America",
Here is "Africa",
And that's "Oceania".
Look at up and down of this globe, up here's called "North Pole" and down here's called "South Pole". Each of these continents itself is divided into some divisions & every one of these divisions is called "Country", in each country there're some "Cities".
All the countries around the world are shown on this globe, for instance this is our dear country "Iran", you see, a bold line is drawn around it & this is "Tehran" where we live in. Now, let me show you the city of "Mecca".
"Look at here!" uncle showed Fatimah another part of the globe & said, "This part, which is enclosed in a thick line, is "Saudi Arabia", & here's the city of "Mecca", where the God's house is in there & this city is very important & great for we Muslims.
"Dear uncle! Can you show me the Kiblah?" Fatimah said.
Uncle showed some places on the globe and their directions to the Kiblah.
After these conversations Fatimah and her uncle went to grandmother to drink tea, Fatimah glanced at her grandmother and her uncle and said, "Can we go to the God's house?"
"Yes sweetie! God willing, we will go together," uncle laughed and said.
Fatimah, who was sitting near the window of her grandmother's house, suddenly saw her mother coming back from the office. Fatimah went to her quickly and jumped in her mother's arm and after kissing, saying hello and greetings, she expressed whatever her uncle and grandmother had told her swiftly, and asked her mother taking her to pilgrim the God's house.
After saying goodbye to grandmother and uncle, they headed back to their house. When Fatimah's father backed home from office; Fatimah explained again to her father, all the things that she had told her mother, and asked them taking her to pilgrim the God's house. After the event, this had become one of her biggest dreams. That night Fatimah was in a strange mood and at the time of prayers, she prayed so much to reach her dream.
