Thanks for your reply Barb,

Sorry, maybe my sentence wasn't clear enough. I do agree with your points here, but this is just how the company works. Or perhaps my tone sounds a bit too serious? Anyway, this is only served as a guideline for the employee.

The first 3 sentences were introduction. Each offence has different point depending on the seriousness of the case.

To answer your concern, I've been working in this company for a rather long time and the management is treating the employee very well. We don't get sued over small issue or mistakes made unintentionally. If its really serious case like theft or fighting then i think legal actions or compensation are okie. I think this is okie even though i'm just the employee.

I would also suggest that you say how many points are assigned to each action.

Likeguslee has made a great start, and has made some excellent clarifications.

However, there are something that could be even clearer, such as #2. "Avoid getting two counts of inefficiency..." for example. I'm not sure the "Do's and Don't's" format (which is often a very good way to do things like this) is the right choice in this case. I would try out parallel structure with all -ing words. Making unsound judgements, Receiving two counts of inefficience, Using company resources without authorization, Failing to inform... etc.

Thank you very much Likeguslee:)
Oh my goodness! I'm pretty glad I don't work there!! Penalties for: "bringing a contagious disease to work" I presume that should be knowingly (disease have a sneaky habit of infecting people without their permission); "private gathering in the company without permission from the management" (stay away from the water cooler folks).

More interesting though is that rules are tyically created to prohibit things that folks are ALREADY doing. Looking down the list makes me think that this is a very dangerous company!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist making a comment on the content rather than the grammar.

Hi Jovee,

I don’t mean to be critical of your “rules”, but in case it appears to be so, I apologize. From glancing over a few lines, I like to post my opinion on this “rule” book which by the way is commonly called “company handbook” in English speaking world.

I have never seen any company handbook written in a “point” system, yet, in such loosely defined language. Speaking from a professional point of view, a handbook must be written in a clear and defined language so that there is no “grey area”. Each potential problem or violation should be stated in a formal, yet professional fashion. The “point system” as shown in your draft has created a tone of “ laws of labor camp” rather than a company environment. Enough said. If you don’t mind, here are a few examples:

1) physical altercation, intentional or otherwise is a direct violation which shall result

in disciplinary action.

2) Persons involved in verbal confrontation or shouting exchange will receive verbal warning which shall stay in the personnel file for 30 days. During this period, repeated offense shall receive written warning which will be recorded in the personnel file. Continuing offenses shall result in immediate termination of employment.

3) Use of vulgar language, display of obscene gesture and provoking behavior are strictly prohibited in the work place. Employees violating the above will be issued a verbal warning for the first offense. Repeated violation will result in termination.

4) Possession or use of narcotics is a crime and will not be tolerated in a workplace. Any employee caught with the above violation will be suspended without pay pending on the outcome of company investigation. If found true, the company shall immediately terminate his employment without compensation.

Hope that gives you some ideas..
