Use of other ( From Cliffs Toefl page:53)

Please explain this part in below:

"If the subject is understood one can omit the noun and keep the determiner and other so that other functions as a pronoun. if it is plural count now that is omitted, other becomes others."

If the subject is understood, one can omit the noun and keep the determiner and other so that other functions as a pronoun.

e.g.

1. There is a large green ball and a small red ball.

John picks up the green ball and hands it to me.

Me: John, I don't want that ball. Give me the other ball.

Me: John, I don't want that ball. Give me the other. (the = determiner; delete "ball". Other is a pronoun. The noun "ball" is understood from the context.)

if it is plural count now that is omitted, other becomes others.

e.g.

There are 10 balls. There are 5 in one group and 5 in the other.

Me: I don't want those balls; I want the others. (The other balls.)

Whew! What a complicated way of saying it.

One man is tall, and the other man is short.

The second use of man is so obvious it can be omitted:

One man is tall, and the other is short.

In the plural,

One man is tall, and the other men are short.
becomes
One man is tall, and the others are short.
