Hi

Is this sentence natural English--I mean, is the use of shut-in common among native speakers?

He could not move on his own and was almost a shut-in.

Thanks,

Tom

If you mean to say that he was rarely able to leave his house (like a recluse), no - at least, it's not an expression that we use in the UK.

It is natural in American English.
