Hi
I heard it (understanding as a verb) in an English movie. Is this standard English?
(by a native speaker)
I am not quite understanding what you mean by 'too late'. Are you trying to imply....
Thanks,
Tom

Yes.
I am understanding; you are understanding; he is understanding; ...
It's not used in the continuous tenses very often, but when it is, it emphasizes immediacy. In your example the 'not understanding' is going on in the speaker's mind at the very same time he is telling us about it.

This is possible but awkward. It would be simpler as I don't understand.
