The term "direct report" is becoming popular of the second usage. More egalitarian than subordinate, perhaps?

To my mind, "direct report" suggest the sort of company that has replaced its employees with resources.

"Human resources", at least. That's got to be better than the "warm bodies" of time immemorial.
