The band called 'The Beatles' was born in the early sixties.
The Beatles were born in the early sixties.

Is the word 'born' appropriate for those sentences, or it would be better to use 'established' or 'founded'? Or maybe sb would have different sugestions?

I think you can as a metaphor. No one will misunderstand you.

You can say it was created, or invented, or that it emerged as an organized sport in...

Use formed when talking about bands.
