Why can't I use hopefully in this case?

Thanks.
Hi,

'Hopefully' has come to be used in the sense of 'the writer hopes . . . , but purists still feel it is substandard.

eg Hopefully Mary will cook dinner. This is commonly intended to mean that the writer hopes Mary will cook dinner.

But the stricter grammar meaning is that the adverb modifies the verb. In other words, Mary, with hope in her heart, will cook dinner.
