Can someone tell me why a wedding breakfast is so called bearing in mind that the meal usually happens in the afternoon and is in no sense a breakfast?

Alasdair.

Really? Mine was a breakfast for the out of town guests who stayed over.

You have obviously come across a reference to something that is not at all common. A wedding breakfast would be a meal served in the morning for the members of the wedding party. If it is held in the afternoon - ever - it is because that specific group likes to sleep in.

I do note that you post from the UK. Perhaps things are different over there.

In no sense? For me, breakfast is the meal you eat after you get up. Not everyone gets up in the morning. When I was in college, I ate breakfast at 9:00 in the evening (I worked night shift). In graduate school and for most of my professional career I ate breakfast at noon or later. Not everybody works day shift.
The types of food served at the meal have more to do about whether it is a breakfast than the time of the day does.

I went into a diner, large sign "breakfast served any time". "give me pancakes during the renaissance"
(I don't take credit, I believe I heard Steven Wright tell this about 20 years back)

"Wedding breakfast" is still used in the UK for the celebratory meal following a weddding. It's a conventional term unrelated to the time of day. It occurs to me that it may be a relic of the old days when the wedding ceremonies involved a nuptial Mass, for which the couple would be observing a fast until they had taken communion.

A wedding breakfast is a local custom in England. While not normally a morning meal, the name apparently arises from the tradition that the bride and bridegroom would have been fasting before the wedding, and so the reception would be the time when they would break their fast. Another theory on the origin of the term is that the wedding breakfast is the first meal of a couple's married life, just as breakfast is the first meal of the day.

Well they are, but 'wedding breakfast' is certainly not the norm here. The vast majority of invitations will be to a 'reception'.
