Hi,
could someone tell me what do you call this kind of footwear in the US?

And another question... is there a difference between a sweatsuit and a tracksuit? I think they are the same...

Thanks Emotion: smile

Sandals. Birkenstock sandals are very popular, and are often just called 'Birkenstocks'.

And another question... is there a difference between a sweatsuit and a tracksuit? I think they are the same...

Yes, no real difference. I tend to hear other terms, though, eg work-out suit, jogging suit, exercise clothes.

Clive
Ah, thanks. So both are called "sandals"... Yeah, Birkenstock are used here too, but I don't know if people call them Birkenstock. I say the usual dialectal word for everything that you wear at home (sandals, slippers, etc.) Emotion: smile

Kooyeen Yeah, Birkenstock are used here too, but I don't know if people call them Birkenstock.
Here in Tuscany we don't Emotion: wink
1. Birkenstocks
2. Flip-flops

3. I think they're the same, too.

CJ
Thank you...
But Clive calls #2 sandals too, and Jim call them flip-flops... Is it a difference between Canadian English and US English, or is it just a matter of preference?
Thanx Emotion: smile

Hi,

I think of flip-flops as the kind of sandal where the main part of the strap goes between your big toe and the toe next to it.Because these shoes are held on much less securely, they 'flop' on your foo as you walk, and are sometimes even said to make a sound as you walk like 'flip flop'.

You'll find some pictures here. http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/flip-flop.html

I don't just use the name for any heel-less sandal.

Clive
Well, in women's shoes, they're called "slides."

I don't know if men's shoes are called that too.

Also, just "beach shoes" or "shower shoes" when they're made of rubber like the ones shown.
