What does the ';' symbol mean?

1. The semi-colon is used to join two sentences that are so closely related that the writer prefers not to separate them with a period.

2. It is also used between examples listed after a colon, especially with phrases.

[There are four kinds of people: those who like you for the right reasons; those who like you for the wrong reasons; those who dislike you for the wrong reasons; and those who dislike you for the right reasons. It's only the last group that matters.]
