Hi Damlasozer,

Welcome to the Forum.

dear teachers,I have three sentences.I dont understand the functions of verbs in these sentences,an explanatıon please...................................................................................

1-''As a nonsmoker,I object to having to breathe in their smoke in restaurants. 'having to breathe ' is a gerund phrase. Do you know about gerunds, which are basically a verb used as a noun? eg Dancing is fun.

2-''Here are some things you can do to help make our country a safer place. 'To help (to) make' are two infinitives. The idea is 'in order to help to make . . .'

3-Make it difficult for our elected officials to forget to vote for gun control. Again, these are two infinitives together.

I''m not sure if this is the kind of answer that you are looking for. If not, please ask again.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi again,

1-''As a nonsmoker,I object to having to breathe in their smoke in restaurants.

2-''Here are some things you can do to help make our country a safer place.

3-Make it difficult for our elected officials to forget to vote for gun control.

I want to ask about first sentence again; is object to the main verb? Yes, it is also why we useto after having? 'have to' expresses necessity. eg A person has to breathe.

İn the second and third sentences why we use'two infinitives together'. There are a lot of verbs that can be followed by an infinitive. eg I forgot to vote. If you put the first verb in the infinitive, the result is two verbs in the infinitive. eg It's stupid to forget to vote.

Are they correct sentences. Yes, they are correct.

What kind of sentences they are? #1 and #3 are basic sentences. #2 is is complex, as it has a subordinate clause ('which you can do').

Best wishes, Clive
