I have made up the conversation below.

(1) I said to my father, "I love you very much. You're the most wonderful dad in the world."

He replied, "That's what I want/wanted to hear."

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think "want" is correct because "That's" is in the present tense. However, my other friends think "wanted" is correct because he just heard your words.

I am not sure who is correct. Please help me. Thank you very much.

They are both correct. "Want" is speaking generally. "Wanted" means he was waiting for it.
