What is a tense exactly and what tenses are there? Of course past tense and the likes are tenses, but what about past simple? Is that a tense?

A tense is a category of the verb or verbal inflections, such as present, past, and future, that expresses the temporal relations between what is reported in a sentence and the time of its utterance.

You say you understand what "past tense" is but you wonder what "past simple" means. It's a tense as well.

The Past Tense, for instance, has:

  1. Past simple - I went to the movies yesterday
  2. Past progressive - She was watching TV when the phone rang
  3. Past perfect - He had just finished high-school when his parents passed away

Hope this helps! Emotion: smile

Thanks. I thought so, but I just wanted to make sure.
