Hi teachers,

Who lives in that house?

Long Answer: Sharon lives in that house.

Short answer: Sharon does.

I guess the verb 'does' here is used to avoid repeating the verb phrase, if I'm not mistaken. Does it function as an auxiliary verb? If not would you tell me what is it?

Thanks in advance

Hi vsuresh,

Thank you very much. And this 'does' helps what exactly?

Hi,

An auxiliary verb is a verb used in forming tenses, moods and voices of other verbs.
Teachers sometimes say that it 'helps' the main verb, because students find this an easy way to grasp the concept of 'auxiliary'. But 'helping' does not imply that the main verb must always be present in the sentence.
You could consider that it is present in the mind of the listener or reader.Emotion: smile

Thank you, Clive. The explanation is quite helpful.
Hi Clive,
I didn't know that. Thank you so much. As I always say: everything learnt, everything to be learn.

What is the meaning of 'moods' in this context?

Thanks again
TS
Hi Clive,
I did some research and I found this explanation:

The mood of a verb, sometimes known as its mode, indicates what type of role it plays in a sentence and/or the speaker's attitude toward it. For the most part, in English as well as Spanish, the most common verb mood is the indicative mood. In general, it is the "normal" verb form, indicating both action and state of being.

Is there anything else to be add? Can you give some examples?

Thanks.
