These are 3 questions from an English test I did yesterday

1.Jake is a very good student of languages. His brother Michael, ______, has never been able to master another language.
A. whereas B. on the other hand

2.The ancient Aztec of Mexico had no technology for making tools from metal. ______, they had sharp knives and spears made from a stone called obsidian.
A. Whereas B. Nevertheless

3. Most 15th century Europeans believed that the world was flat and that a ship could conceivably sail off the end of the earth. ______, many sailors of the time refined to venture forth with explorers into unknown waters.
A. Nevertheless B. Therefore

My teacher's answers were: 1.B, 2.A, 3.B but I chose the others
I don't understand why I should choose so
Please explain

Thank you very much for your help.

I think the answers should be B, B, B myself.

1-- Whereas is a conjunction, so cannot be used this way.
2-- Despite their lack of metal technology, they had sharp weapons; therefore Nevertheless (= 'despite anything to the contrary')
3-- Because of the danger of sailing off the end of the world-- I'm presuming that 'refined' means 'refused'--, then Therefore is the correct answer.
Thank you Mister Micawber for your answer.

In question 3, maybe there is a vocabulary error. "Refine" doesn't make sense because it means "to become pure".
But according to my teacher, the last sentence means "the sailors WANT to venture forth".
If so, "therefore" here doesn't seem to be correct because the meaning of the sentence contradicts the previous one.

Thanks

In that case, B, B, A.

My answers as well....
I didn't see the last two posts...Emotion: embarrassed

If the word "refined" is a wrong word, which in my mind was interpreted as "refrained". So I picked "B". Now I am not sure which one the correct answers is for # 3 because, the meaning of the passage didn't make complete logical sense either with A or B.

refined is definitely the wrong word in example 3.

It could be Nevertheless the sailors [lined up / signed up] to venture forth or Therefore the sailors refused to venture forth. I suspect the original was refused, and it was copied wrong at some point along the way.
