It is recognized that the interviewees do not form a statistically representative sample of public-sector museums or museum employees in England – with there being an over-representation of University and Trust museums and an under-representation of local authority and national museums, and an over-representation of education/outreach staff and an under-representation of conservation staff – so there is an element in the discussion of the findings that is indicative rather than anything more deinitive.

What is statistically representative sample? what does that mean by Interviewees don’t form it?

What does with there being mean?

What does over- and under-representation mean?

Suppose there are three groups of people in your town. Each group must send some individuals from their group to represent them in a national conference.

Group 1 has 300 people. They send 6 representatives to the national conference. (2%)
Group 2 has 600 people. They send 6 representatives to the national conference. (1%)
Group 3 has 100 people. They send 8 representatives to the national conference. (8%)

When you compare the representation among the three groups, Group 2 is under-represented, and Group 3 is over-represented at the national conference.

If the percentage of representatives to the number of people in the group was the same for each group, we would say that we had a statistically representative sample.
