By 'we' I mean anyone and everyone in the world. By 'religion' I mean any and all religions, creeds, cults, faiths, persuasions, beliefs or doctrines.

Hi one and all, my name is Lionel, I live in Paris, France. As you like to be classified here (I'm a christian, I'm muslum, I'm black with green spots........as if your proclamation is some sort of qualification) I'll classify my self. I like to think of myself as a seeker of truth. I like truth, it's that big solid thing, all shiny white and teflon coated. It won't be changed or bent, you can hide it but it's still there and will be there for all time.

Back to my question if anyone would like to comment. Some people will say that apart from a reasonable moral code, religions bring very little to us. In general they cause arguements and separate people. Worse they have caused more murders, killings and unhappiness than anything else. Surely they can't be good for us?...

Note: Please don't stamp me as a non-believer, you don't know that. Maybe I'm just adult enough to be able to question my beliefs from time to time?.

Lionel

PS Has anyone noticed there is a lie in the middle of belief ?.

...the world would be better without religious fanatism... Emotion: smile I think that each religion gives to everybody a sense of don't being alone trying to survive in this world... maybe without religion the world would become crazier than now Emotion: wink
....Exactly the point!.......no religion......no fanaticsEmotion: big smile Well maybe there would be some fanatics but they wouldn't be able to use religion to justify their actions.

As to the world becoming crazier than now.............is that possible?.Emotion: wink

I don't think the absence of religion would stop wars. So there's no use putting all the blame on religion. As I see it, as long as there are psychos in this world, they will pick on one thing, if not another, to justify their psychotic actions.

(And by the way, I don't have a religion)

I think Religion is just the excuse that some people use. It is not religion itself that causes wars. Its all to do with the way people reason things out.

We can't forget that Religions have brought good things to us. For example, I read in Focus magazine that studies have shown that "mindfullness meditation", which was introduced by Buddhists, helps alleviate a wide range of stress-related disorders. It was found that just 30 minutes of meditation each day produced higher levels of positive emotion and decreased anxiety and negativity.

Mass worship is another positive aspect. Hundreds of scientific studies of having a religious practice revealed strong evidence of lower rates of depression compared to those without such spiritual ties.

Even though one does not have to be religious to be non-materialistic, a core belief of most religions is that happiness comes from spiritual rather than material values. There is now scientific evidence that not only does materialism fail to bring happiness, but it actually makes people more miserable, causing them to feel less satisfied, more anxious, angry and prone to depression, and people who focus more on having better relations with others have significantly higher levels of psychological well-being.
Hi Savvysavz, Your quite right, the absence of religion would not stop wars. But don't you agree that it would seriously cut down the number of wars that have been and those that could be fought over religious differences?.

The seven Crusades of medieval times started by Pope Urban II. "The west should march eastward" he said. "God wills it" the battlecry of the Crusaders. Absolution and remission of sins for all who die in his service. And so followed 389 years of Holy wars.

Here we are 541 years later and some people would say there are many similarities between the crusades and the situation today. Except of course the perceived threat comes from the east, towards the west. Absolution and remission of sins for all suicide bombers who die in his service. "God wills it" the same battlecry. Jihad...Holy war.....the same result.

Will we never learn?????.

Allo Lionel, I agree with Henrietta... if there wasn't religion anyways man would take any other "flag" to make war... ambition will be ambition with or without religion.... have a nice day Emotion: wink
