Hi
A continuation like [...] would allow me to gain the initiative on this side of the board
means
A continuation like [...] can allow me to gain the initiative on this side of the board
or is there a difference?

Thanks in advance

'would allow' sounds all right.

'can allow' sounds wrong. You may as well say 'allows'.

'might allow' is also possible.

Why is 'can allow' wrong?

In the given context 'can' and 'allow' mean almost the same thing.

'can allow' is not always wrong:

This movie is not appropriate for children under 13, but I can allow children over 12 to see it.
