re: Would Of Probability? page 2
Hi CJ,
Scene 1
Katniss Everdeen: President Snow. What an honor.
President Snow: My dear, I think we can make this so much simpler. If we agree not to lie to each other, what do you think?
Katniss Everdeen: Yes, I think that would save time.
President Snow: Sit down, please.
Scene 2
Johanna Mason: How do we know the wire's not gonna burn up?
Beetee: Because I invented it. I assure you, it won't burn up. [they all look at each other for a moment]
Johanna Mason: Well, it's better than hunting them down.
Katniss Everdeen: Yeah, why not? If it fails, no harm done anyway, right?
Peeta Mellark: Alright, I say we try it.
Finnick Odair: So what can we do to help?
Beetee: Keep me alive for the next six hours. That would be extremely helpful.
Are woulds in scene 1 and scene 2 would of probability?
Also CJ, please answer this question for me and I promise I will never post anything about would at all. If I get confused, I will just go over all the questions that you answered.
A: I don’t know what language this text is. Jack would understand it. He is a linguist. I will ask him.
B: Jack would know the answer to your question. You should ask him.
Aren’t they clearly the woulds of probability? You can answer in yes or no. Please answer this last question.
No more questions asked about would from now on. If I did, please don’t answer it. I promise. It’s time for me to get over it.
Let me just repeat what I wrote earlier:
But in any case, you should interpret these sentences in whatever way makes most sense to you.
It seems that you like the interpretation that both of these uses of "would" are what you call "second conditional" uses of "would".
OK. That's fine.
CJ
Yes.
OK.
It is fervently to be hoped.
CJ
