Because my house is far from my university. It is about 12 km. And I have to go to school early. I usually leave home at half past six. This is how to go to school every day. I go straight on the road, turn right at the T-junction, continue to go ahead about 5 minutes, then turn right at the crossroads and keep going straight for about 5 meters. And finally, I walk along the trees from where I can see my university across the street.

Actually I was lucky because my university is a 30 minute walk away.
I recalculate, I am new to this university and I find the shortcut, now my time to get there is 15 minutes.
These are often used synonymously in North America. When talking generally, in other parts of the English speaking world, they are not the same.
