Disney to remake Yellow Submarine
A 3D remake of The Beatles' 1968 film Yellow Submarine has been confirmed, Disney Studios has announced.
It will incorporate the 16 Beatles songs and recordings from the original animated film.
Disney Studios chairman Cook said the new film will be directed by Robert Zemeckis using the same motion-capture effects employed in Polar Express.
Meanwhile, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been confirmed as the name of the new film in the series.

Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the fourth instalment, which will debut in 2011.
Disney has also said it was starting a new "scary movie" label venture with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro called Disney Double Dare You.
The announcements were made at a four-day fan convention in California, that featured appearances from Depp, Tim Burton, Miley Cyrus and Nicolas Cage.
John Travolta also turned up with wife Kelly Preston.

It was the couple's first public appearance since the death of their son, Jett, in January.

Why?

Because they keep trying to remake The Beatles without any luck. Weirdly, either Menudo nor The Jonas Brothers made the same splash.

Because they can make money with it.

I guess that's the theory anyway. I wonder what audience they're aiming at?

I imagine it's the audience that thinks there's a statue of John Lennon in Red Square and that Ringo Starr was an old-west gunfighter.

Seriously, I'm totally a modernist, and generally prefer glossy eye-candy remakes to earnest-but-dated originals (cf. The Italian Job, King Kong). But "Yellow Submarine" is almost more of a painting than a film, with timely references to (or outright lifts from) Milton Glaser and Peter Max and all the psychedelic album cover art of the time. What could they possibly reference from today's world to match that?
I guess, if somebody made me King of the Remake, I'd go with a manga, graphic-novel approach characters slipping between frames, frames breaking, 2-D, 3-D (4-D?), characters of different, famous styles meeting cute Michael Turner babes meet David Cowles slackers... Heavy on the Japanese styling. The remake only makes sense if it's artistically relevant to young people, and what other graphical language would work?

Well I'm guessing a lot of people never saw the original simply because they weren't alive at the time. Pretty much anyone under 30.
