In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations.

The average life expectancy of people is increasing in most developed countries. The two main problems which can arise from this are more dependency on their children and high medical care cost. There are a number of remedies to this problem.

Increasing average life of people can cause two issues for the individuals and society. First, old people will depend on their children for their livelihood as they will not be able to do work due to age. Their children will need to support them and take care of them. Another issue from increasing life expectancy is high medical treatment cost. Elderly people are prone to more illnesses since they are physically weak. Resultantly, their medical treatment cost will be high which will be borne by their family members. In Japan, for example, the average age of a person has increased from 68 years to 71 years in the last decade. This has increased the annual expenses of each family by around USD 1,000 and the medical insurance cost.

This problem can be mitigated by two effective solutions. First, governments should extend the retirement age of people so that they can work for a longer period. By doing this, these people will be generating income and will not depend on their family members. In 2015, for instance, the Canadian government increased the retirement age of public sector employees from 60 to 62 years. Their economy increased by 8% in that year due to higher average income of people. Second, governments should encourage their citizens to have healthy dietary habits so that they do not suffer from illnesses in old age. Having a healthy and nutritious diet can prevent them from various diseases, and governments can save much amount that would otherwise be incurred on their medical treatment.

In conclusion, the increase in life expectancy in many developed countries is causing many problems. However, governments should persuade people to have healthy diets and extend their retirement age. If implemented, this can be mitigated effectively.
