Well, this is a tricky one because there's no single answer, indeed. The explanation in Russian, however, should give a clue which word is preferable in this or that sentence. Of course, it doesn't mean that all the other options are totally wrong, hehe.

As I'm russian speaker I got 5 out of 5 (Прошел тест в первый же день как он был опубликован)...

But it is strange that native speaker scored only 2 of 5 (I suppose that CalifJim is a native speaker)

Пытаюсь разобраться в причине столь странных результатов прохождения теста... так что решил собрать более подробную информацию по использованию recall/recollect/remember, которые собираюсь опубликовать в виде отдельных постов в данной ветке форума(так что это это только первая заметка).

P.S. Пишу по-английски ибо надеюсь на помощь и комментарии native-speaker'ов([:)])...

TO REMEMBER

Usually means to have in or to be able to bring to one's mind the knowledge or perception of a situation(or fact) or something from the past.

I remember last summer when ... (smth. happen)

I remember her being a dominant figure

I remember the Cold War

Expresses that somebiy should do something(that someone undertaken to do smth. or that it is necessary or advisable to do smth.)

Did you remember to read the article ...

I did remember to read the article ...

Used to emphasize the importance of what is asserted

You must remember that ...

It is importan to remember that ...

It is worth remembering that ...

And as it was mentioned in Ruslana's post:

So that cannot remember smth = to be unable to bring it back into your mind when you make an effort to do so.

Rememer is also used to express that someone will be remembered for something they have done

Nicola Tesla will always be remembered as great inventor in the field of electromagnetism

to convey greetings from one person to another

remember me to John

And if you make a celebration an occasion to remember, you make it very enjoyable for all the people involved...

TO RECALL - TO RECOLLECT

The definition of Recollect from the yourdictionary :

1) to call back to mind; recall; remember, esp. with some effort

2) to recall to (oneself) something temporarily forgotten

It's difficult to see the difference between remember/recall/recollect, but I'll try to

Recall and recollect are used to emphasize the process of bringing smth. back to mind...

I'm recollecting smth. - Я пытаюсь вспомнить(связать все это) ...

This recalls smth. to me - Это напоминает мне ...

Recollect means to remember smth. on the base of dim memories(to collect these separate pieces of memory together):

RuslanaВспоминать со значительным усилием, стараться вспомнить, из деталей собирать одно целое (to collect - собирать, комплектовать).

I've been trying to recollect what happened - Я пытался воссоздать картину происшедшего

I don't(can't) recollect anything - Как ни пытаюсь - ничего не могу вспомнить!

Recall

Ruslana Подразумевается некоторое усилие, но не слишком напряженное - вспоминание хранится в памяти и его просто вызывают (to call - звать, вызывать)

So that recall implies smaller effort than recollect but bigger than remember. It expresses the process of bringing smth. to mind but as you're trying to remember the single-piece of information you needn't to recollect it.

Мне кажется, что в большинстве случаев recall можно перевести на русский как припоминать...

I know him well, but I can't recall his name to mind - Я знал его хорошо, только вот имени его припомнить не мог

I can still vaguely recall being taken to the hospital - До сих пор смутно помню как оказался в больнице

I recall him as a great scientist - Помнится, он был выдающимся ученым

Достаточно интересное предложение:

Подвожу итоги.

Я считаю правильным следующие варианты:

1. I tried hard, but I couldn't remember(recollect) her face

Более подходящим мне показалось именно remember, хотя в зависимости от контекста вполне может быть и recollect. Recount - не подходит, ввиду фразы "I tried hard"...

2. I recalled(remembered, recollected) our last conversation easily

Все три варианта подходят. Я применил recalled, хотя remembered в данном случае ничем не хуже, разница лишь в том на чем акцентируется внимание(см. пример с падающим деревом ). Более того, в зависимости от контекста вполне может быть использовано и recollect...

3. Jack couldn't remember(recall) who he had given that book to read to

И так вроде-бы все ясно...

4. Try to remember(recollect) all the details. It's very important

Recount явно не подходит, применение remember/recollect зависит от контекста - подобные примеры приведены в предудыщих постах.

5. I've met that man before but I can't remember(recall) his name

Recollect явно не подходит... remember/recall - зависит от контекста.

Интересно было бы узнать ваше мнение.

Ну, в целом вроде бы всё логично, только у меня сложилось впечатление, что recall подразумевает всё-таки меньше усилий, чем оба recollect и remember. Тут достаточно тонкие смысловые грани, ну а поскольку во многих случаях глаголы взаимозаменяемы, то серьёзной ошибки всё равно не будет.

Кстати, в последнем посте вместо "recount" должно быть "recall", я полагаю?
